The five moral precepts themselves are called five maha-danas. One who observes the moral precept of abstaining from killing others is called one who performs abhaya-dana, because he will be harmless towards living-beings. In the same way, observing the five moral precepts and protecting living-beings from danger mean giving security and peace to the beings. So observing the five moral precepts is called the five great offerings (maha-danas). We must observe these five precepts well to be the good Buddhists.
